Amtrak services (tel: (202) 906 4971 or (800) 872 7245, toll free USA and Canada only; website: www.amtrak.com) cover long-distance routes from Washington, DC; while MTA/MARC trains (tel: (410) 539 5000; website: www.mtamaryland.com) connect with points in Maryland. Train services operate Monday to Friday 0500-2400. The vast Union Station is on Massachusetts Avenue and extensive facilities include restaurants, shops, post office, ATMs and left-luggage. The ticket office is open 0515-2230 weekdays (0530-2230 weekends) and tickets can also be bought from the 24-hour Quik-Trak ticketing machines.

Rail services:
Amtrak operates long-distance services, including regular departures to Philadelphia (journey time - 1 hour 45 minutes), New York (3 hours) and Chicago (17 hours 30 minutes). The fast Metroliner service has cut the journey time to New York to around three hours. MTA/MARC operates local services, including to Baltimore and other towns in Maryland.

Transport to the city:
The station is served by the Metro bus system as well as the Union Station Metro station.
